Busy Beavers

Beavers are some of the busiest builders in nature. They use their strong front teeth to cut down small trees. Then they drag the branches to a stream. Beavers pile up sticks, rocks and mud to build a dam. The dam slows the water and makes a quiet pond. In the middle of the pond, beavers build a home called a lodge. The lodge has an underwater door, so foxes and wolves cannot get in. Beavers fix their dams every night. A family of beavers can change a whole stream in just one summer.
