Text 1: The Night Garden

When the sun goes down, a different garden wakes up. Moths flutter around pale flowers that open only after dark. Bats swoop low over the grass, catching insects in the air. A toad hops out from under a flat stone, hunting for slugs. Fireflies blink their tiny lights to find each other. Many of these night animals have large eyes or sharp hearing to help them find their way. By morning, they hide again, and the daytime garden takes over as if nothing happened.

Text 2: Owl's Long Night

Owl stretched her wings as the moon rose over the old barn. She had slept all day in the hayloft, and now she was hungry. Turning her head almost all the way around, she listened. A tiny rustle came from the long grass. Owl swooped down without a sound, but the mouse dashed into its hole just in time. Owl was not discouraged. She flew to the fence post and waited, her huge yellow eyes shining. When the sky turned pink, she flew back to the hayloft to sleep.
